about

Many music fans are familiar with the unique accordion opening of Paul Simon’s “Boy In the Bubble” from his 1986 release “Graceland.” Forere Motloheloa of Tau Ea Matsekha was recruited to play accordion on the track, which Forere and Simon also co-
wrote.

Tau Ea Matsekha (‘Lion Of Matsekha’) is one of the great Sotho accordion groups and compilation Mohlape Oa Litau is made up of tracks from three of the band’s early albums - all long since out of print and whose masters have either been destroyed or lost. These tracks have been taken from the original vinyl issues of ‘Basotho Group’, recorded in 1980 and released on Kwasa KWALP 7001 (which features Baghiti Khumalo of Graceland fame on bass); ‘Forere Mamela’, Recorded in 1990 and released on Kwasa KWALP 4065091; ‘Mamelang Makholokoe’, recorded in 1991 and released on Kwasa KWALP 7020.

A further famous connection with the ‘Graceland’ album was the fact that early Tau collaborator Baghiti Khumalo was responsible for much of the classic bass on that record. Tau Ea Matsekha were later invited to perform at a festival in Sweden in 1997, to date the group’s only overseas appearance. In 2011, Foere was also involved in the ‘Graceland’ 25th Anniversary recordings in Johannesburg.
